Written By: Braham Singh Version: 1 Dated: Abstract: This white paper proposes a Tier 3 data center design integrated with a microgrid, eliminating reliance on diesel generators by using renewable energy sources like solar, battery storage (BESS), and gas turbines. It addresses the increasing power demands from AI and aims for high availability, reliability, and environmental sustainability. Key to this integration are strategies to overcome regulatory uncertainty and standardize processes through proactive engagement and blockchain registries for carbon credits. The design incorporates advanced microgrid controllers for efficient load balancing, smart utilization of gas turbine waste heat (CHP), and dynamic power management (DPM) for IT loads. This microgrid setup also facilitates revenue generation through carbon credit aggregation and potential power sales back to the grid. Ultimately, the paper advocates for a microgrid-centric approach, enabling data centers to reduce emissions, lower operational costs, optimize renewable energy usage, and establish a more sustainable and resilient infrastructure. |
